Too many young
people are not reaching their goals because they are holding
back.
Their fears,
ignorance, and even their friendships are influencing their poor
choices.
We can hear
them say, “All my life, I have wanted to play football…or
get a “A” in that class…or find a boyfriend
who really loves me.” Well, at some point of facing repeated
disappointments, you’ve got to take charge of what’s
going on and make some changes.
So many people
are settling for mediocrity, accepting less than they could accomplish.
Making good
decisions to get on the right track can be painful, but very
satisfying.
You’ve
got to be strong and determined, staying committed, practicing
patience and perseverance. Overcoming obstacles is how we grow
stronger.
• Life is a journey, not a destination. No one ever “arrives” at
the final point, where
no more work or change is needed. Real life is often a series
of ups and downs, requiring us to be patient and flexible.
We need to practice bouncing back, taking on the next challenge.
We may not always control our circumstances, but we can choose
our effort. Every tough situation requires keeping your cool.
• Unreal standards in society are causing major anxiety levels in people. We
live in
times of distorted standards about personal looks, easy roads
to public acclaim or wealth, and satisfaction from drug use.
It is not easy to see the “truth” through all the
false information. Realizing that normal looks are still unique
and that hard work through the years can still bring a good
living is all part of growing up. When it comes to drug use,
many drugs, including alcohol, marijuana and “party” drugs
like ecstasy, create depression, anger and a deflated personal
drive once they get a hold on people. Sometimes, the damage
is horrendous!
• Determination and perseverance are only made stronger through being
challenged.
Muscles don’t
grow unless they are pushed or strained. Character strengths
grow the same way, by trials that test us severely. You can only
become confident and self-assured by going through the fire and
getting to the other side. Mistakes are how we learn. Growth
is what we gain. The best people are those who are willing to
go the distance, who stay committed to the end.
• Friend who don’t have our best interests at heart are not good
friends. People who want
us to follow them into poor choices, or turn away from our
convictions, are not worthy to lead. We can be smart, realizing
that staying on the right track gives us the best chance
for success. Having good friends who will help you stand
firm and keep you strong is essential these days. Good friends
don’t play loose with your safety or your future.
The most admired
people are often those who have overcome great obstacles to reach
their dreams. We can be those people, digging down deep, with
great determination, and refusing to settle for being mediocre.
Our attitude can be one of positive refusal, bouncing back
from every disappointment, with an inner strength we call MISSION:
POSSIBLE!
