We often think of champions as
the best at what they do, the ones who win the most games or
get the best grades. But over the years, champions are usually
people who have kept fighting through the struggles of life and
made amazing strides. Many champions didn’t start out anywhere
close to being good. They might have been big, or strong, or
smart, but they probably weren’t ALL of those things. Every
person is a combination of strengths and weaknesses.
Our life circumstances are filled with ups and downs.
There isn’t a perfect life!
• CHAMPIONS overcome obstacles. No one has a totally
easy time getting to the top of their success without facing problems, struggles, and
barriers. You have to be determined and perseverant, working
through the problems or set-backs you encounter. Sayings like “never
give up,” “give it all you’ve got,” or “bounce
back up” give us the right perspective.
• CHAMPIONS are willing to try again. Disappointments
are not disasters. Everyone has failures or mistakes.
You can’t expect to go through life without disappointment
or unhappiness. Sometimes we aim high and fall short. Sometimes
we aim low and realize that we could have done
better. Disappointment can push us in more positive directions.
It’s best to not
dwell on the failures but learn from them.
• CHAMPIONS maximize their opportunities. People who
become good at anything have the desire to get better. They like learning and
doing their best. But, most of all, they take each day as an opportunity to
become better. You can listen more, practice more, learn from
others who are better than you…and keep getting better.
• CHAMPIONS are not bullies. We always build the best
school or class when we choose kindness over cruelty. Pushing people around does
not make you strong…it just creates enemies, people who
may want to hurt you back. Being tough, being able to endure
the hardest of times, doesn’t mean making fun of others
who are weaker than you, or fighting to show your strength.
• CHAMPIONS watch out for others. Champions are protectors, they
watch out for the safety and good
health of others. We can notice things that harm people and encourage
them to avoid those choices. We can be a good example and do the right
thing ourselves. We can start making small changes to be safer, like wear seat
belts or speak out against drug use. We can agree to eat better foods or wear
helmets to reduce problems that might come later in life.
People don’t become
stronger by having an easy life. They grow stronger by
facing many kinds of difficulties, disappointments and failures.
Just because you’re not the best one yet doesn’t
mean that you can’t reach the top someday. And if you never reach
the top spot when compared to others, it doesn’t mean you
can’t be the best YOU you can be. People who give their
best usually turn out to be their best. If you never give
up, and keep learning from every mistake, you can overcome the
toughest times and do amazing things. That’s what makes
CHAMPIONS!
